Getting A Filling? Here’s What You Need To Know
To treat a cavity your dentist will remove the decayed portion of the tooth and then “fill” the area on the tooth where the decayed material was removed.
Fillings are also used to repair cracked or broken teeth and teeth that have been worn down from misuse.
Is a Filling Necessary?
When does filling come into the picture. A hole can form in the exterior of the tooth due to decay known as a cavity. When this happens, it needs to be filled, or the hole can worsen, allowing bacteria to grow and potentially reach the interior of the tooth. At this point, a more serious dental treatment known as a root canal will be needed. It’s usually pretty easy to tell if you need a filling, as you’ll be experiencing sensitivity to heat or cold in the same area of the mouth regularly.
The Filling Options Available
Dental fillings can be made of a variety of different materials. These include safe resin composite materials which match the color of the natural teeth, gold, or silver. The material used depends on how extensive the damage is, the cost, and whether or not you have any allergies. If you’ve never received a filling, you might be nervous about undergoing the procedure, but it is very common and can be performed quickly.
The Steps Involved with Getting a Filling
The first step in the dental filling procedure is to administer a local anesthetic so that the area around the affected tooth becomes numb, increasing the comfort of the patient throughout the procedure. Next, the decayed or damaged tooth and its surrounding areas should be prepared for restoration. The filling material is then applied to the area to fill the cavity. Various adhesives are placed before the composite material. The composite material can then be hardened with the use of a special bonding light.
